The right way to store apples can seem like a puzzle. Don’t worry, though, because in the following lines we have the solution for you.
I have a feeling that apples are not appreciated as much as they deserve. Perhaps because they are always available, we often prefer the more exotic options. And yet, this fruit is full of vitamins, polyphenols, plant fibers , ingredients that benefit our health, which is why they deserve a place in our daily menu.
It is therefore a good idea to go to the nearest supermarket or fruit shop and get some. It is also good to know how to properly maintain them at home.
How to pick apples
Avoid apples with soft spots, marks and holes or tears in the skin, and prefer those with a smooth surface. In general, apples should be firm , but not rock hard, and their skin should be shiny. It is good that the stem of the apple is intact , in order to keep it longer.
Also, if you get them over the counter , they will probably last longer. Apples from supermarkets may have spent a long time in storage before reaching the shelves of the local store.
The correct storage of apples
The usual practice is to store the apples in a paper bag and leave them on the kitchen counter. But, this way the apples deteriorate faster. Why; Because the bag traps the ethylene they release naturally , accelerating their ripening. In fact, the riper the fruit, the more gas it emits.
If you are going to eat the apples within a few days, you can store them in a cool, dry, ventilated area in the kitchen, away from direct light. For a longer period, it is good to put them in a plastic bag and store them in the refrigerator drawer , after first wiping them with a cloth to remove any residues.
The storage of cut apples
It may not be the best way to preserve them, because they turn black quickly. In case, however, you want to prepare tapas with snacks, it is good to know what you need to do. First, you fill a bowl with cold water and add a tablespoon of lemon juice . Cut the apples and put them in the bowl. Close the container tightly and put it in the fridge.
Do they go in the freezer?
And yet, they enter. All you have to do is follow these steps: Clean, peel and cut the apples into slices or cubes. You place them in a pan lined with parchment paper (without one touching the other) and put the pan in the freezer for an hour. Finally, you transfer the apples to an airtight container and store them in the freezer. As soon as you want to use them, e.g. to make a delicious apple pie , you take them out and use them normally.
