Does an egg

Rich in nutrients

In China, eggs have been valued for centuries as a dietary supplement, especially for children, pregnant women, and unwell men and women.

In the UK and US, however, milk and an apple are the go-to snack options, but nutritionists say we could be wrong. “Eggs are a fantastic, nutrient-dense food that provides almost all the vitamins and protein you need Professor Tim Spector OBE, an epidemiologist and nutrition expert, told the Telegraph.

“An egg every day can make a significant contribution to overall nutrition, particularly in areas where food access and overall nutritional status are likely to be lower.”

The term an apple a day keeps the doctor away was first recorded around 1860. It is said to have come from an old Welsh saying that said: “Eat an apple when you go to bed and you’ll keep the doctor from earning his living ».

Compared to apples, eggs have three times the calories and thirteen times the protein. However, apples may be especially good for gut health as they contain fiber and polyphenols, which are beneficial plant compounds with antioxidant properties that protect against various diseases.

Professor Spector said an apple a day is a good start, but that it is not enough and that a variety of fruit and vegetables is far more important.

If nutritionists had to decide between apples, eggs and milk, which would they choose? “Of the three, I would choose eggs ,” Professor Spector concludes.

or an apple a day keep the doctor away? The conclusion of a new study published by scientists from New York and China, found that an egg a day helps children grow and develop faster, improving not only their height, but also their weight and body mass.

“An egg a day helps keep malnutrition at bay,” said Professor Minchao Jin of New York University’s Silver School of Social Work. “An egg per school day for two semesters leads to a significant improvement in height and weight,” he added.

However, this contradicts what we have believed for years, that is, an apple a day is what is needed.

So which is the right one? The apple or the egg?

The study evaluated children in underdeveloped areas of central and western China, where malnutrition and stunted growth remain rampant. Comparisons were made between 252 children who ate an egg a day for two school terms or most of a year and other children who did not eat eggs.

In the treatment group, the proportion of underweight children fell from 9.2% to 1.1%, while the proportion of more severely malnourished children defined as “underweight” fell from 6.4% to zero. Cachexia also decreased.

Good nutrition during the first three years of life is vital for human development, both physical and mental. But children also experience major growth spurts from the age of eight onwards.

“Young children are developing rapidly, including their physical growth, but also their neural development, so their bodies need more energy and nutrients,” said Professor Jin.

“The window for this is quite small, and when children pass the developmental age, many functions are regulated. This is why we target school children. We have to catch the window.”
